I’m really pleased that my first few months as Musical Director of Oxford Pro Musica have gone so well. Following someone like Michael Smedley – who conducted the choir for 36 years – was never going to be any easy task, but I’m pleased that having been a member of the choir before taking over really helped. Our first two concerts, “Byrd and Parry” and “Miserere” have been fantastic occasions, and it was really heartening to perform to a full house in Exeter College Chapel for the second one.
THe next concert is quite exciting for me; I love orchestral conducting but as always, it’s very difficult to get much ‘live’ experience, especially when you are still making your name as a conductor. It’s great to be able to work with such a high-quality established (yet amateur) orchestra such as Oxford Sinfonia. I hope that it will be the beginning of a fruitful relationship with them, both for me and the choir.
